2008 Floral Design Competition

Open to all Professional and Amateur Flower Arrangers and Garden Club Members

Class 1: “Octopus’s Garden” (6 entries)
   Create a design depicting the ocean floor. No electric. No height restrictions. Design not to exceed cube dimensions, must be draped. Staged on a cube 24” wide x 24” deep x 36” high.  Advisor for this class is Chris Grigas (427-7758).

Class 2: “Double Trouble” (5 entries)
   Two designers from 2 different floral shops to create an armature design to be staged on a platform is 48” wide x 36” deep x 6” high. Design must be a minimum of 3’ high. Advisor for this class is Michele Peters (446-9900).

Class 3: “Fun with Foam” (6 entries) 
   Create a monochromatic mass design featuring colored foam of any shape. You may choose from any one of the following colors: pink, red, yellow, blue, orange, lime green or white (no standard green foam allowed). Staged on a pedestal 37" high, with a 12" square top, not to exceed 24" w x 42" h.  Advisor for this class is Maureen Peters (446-9900).

Class 4: “Vegged Out” (6 entries)
   An imaginative design using only vegetables and foliage. No flowers allowed. To be staged on a pedestal 37" high, with a 16" square top, not to exceed 32" wide. No height restrictions.  Advisor for this class is Erin McGowen-Brady (784-2315).

Class 5: “Get Buggy” (6 entries)
   Create a garden insect out of fresh and/or dried materials.  Design to be staged on a table in a space 30” deep x 24” wide with no height restrictions. Advisor for this class is Michele Peters (446-9900).

Class 6: “Au Naturale” (6 entries) 
   Design an arrangement made of organic materials, including the container.  Staged on a pedestal 37" high, with a 16" square top, not to exceed 32" wide x 60" tall.   Advisor for this class is Marilyn Cederoth (828-0790).

Class 7: “Paving the Way” (6 entries)
   Create a fresh pave’ design.  To be staged on a table in a space 30" square, not to exceed 24" wide.   Advisor for this class is Erin McGowen-Brady (784-2315).

Class 8: “On the Horizon” (6 entries)
   Create a horizontal design. Not to exceed 4’ wide x 18" tall. To be staged on a pedestal 30 ˝” high, with an 18" square top.  Advisor for this class is Marilyn Cederoth (828-0790).

Class 9: “Ying & Yang” (6 entries)
   Create a black & white vignette design. All props, flowers, and linens must be black or white.  Staged on a 48” round table. Advisor for this class is Michele Peters (446-9900).

Class 10: “Got Silk?” (4 entries-Non-judged)
   Create a permanent botanical design using only silk materials. Staged on a pedestal 44” tall with a rectangular top measuring 24” x 13 1/2”. Advisor for this class is Pete Whelan (271-0891).


Classes 11 – 13 for Students only

Class 11: “Spring has Sprung” (Limited to 15 entries)
   Create a spring candle ring, up to 12” in diameter; to include a pillar candle (cannot be lit). To be staged on a table, in a space not to exceed 14” wide x 14” deep x 24” tall. On-site Advisor, Chris Grigas.

Class 12:  “Mellow Yellow” (Limited to 15 entries)
  Create an all yellow, symmetrical arrangement in or including a basket.  Arrangement staged on a table in a space not to exceed 18” wide x 15” deep x 24” high.  On-site Advisor, Erin McGowen-Brady.

Class 13: “Towering Heights” (Limited to 10 entries)
  Create a vertical arrangement. Staged on a table in a space not to exceed 10” wide and 24” tall.  On-site Advisor, Michele Peters.


Classes 14-19
for Garden Club Members Only

Class 14: “City Scape”  (4 entries)
Creative line design using only fresh plant material suggesting a city environment staged before a black board 24” wide x 36” tall.  No draping or accessories allowed.  Consultant: Dee Foley

Class 15: “Country Glory”  (4 entries)
A mass arrangement using fresh floral material. To be staged on a pedestal with a 12x12 inch top on a 36” high pedestal to be viewed on three sides. This design would emphasize the beauty of country flowers.  Consultant:  Marilyn Ryan

Class 16: “Gems of the City”  (8 entries)
A miniature arrangement of fresh floral material in small containers of the designer’s choice, not to exceed 5 inches in height, width or depth.  Staged on an upended standard size martini glass.  Glass to be provided by committee.   (The scope of the flowers should be proportionate to the size of the arrangements.)  Incorporate sparkle such as beads, pearls, rhinestones, etc.  Consultant: Brenda Ladd

Class 17: “Country Garden Bounty”  (4 entries)
A creative arrangement incorporating fruits and vegetables along with fresh floral material in a container of the designer’s choice.  Staged before a black board 24” wide x 36" tall.   Consultant: Reneta Benenati

Class 18: “City Rendezvous”  (4 entries)
A functional table for two. Accessories and table cloth provided by the designer.  Black under lay will be provided.  To exemplify dining in the City ( i.e.: American, Chinese, French, Italian, etc).  Staged on a 36” round table, 30” high.  Silverware not allowed.  Consultant:  Jean Smith

Class 19: “Country Reflections”  (4 entries)
A creative arrangement incorporating water as an integral part of the design.  Using fresh plant material.  Staged on a mirror 12” x 12”, with a black backboard 24” wide x 36” tall.  Accessories permitted.   Consultant: Mardi Leather


Horticulture Class
“Country meets City” (24 entries)
  

  This is a horticulture category which incorporates rooted container grown house plants, grown by the exhibitor for a period of at least three months.  Overall dimensions not to exceed 24”.  No cuttings.  The plants are judged against perfection rather than against other plants. Consultant: Don Otterness

  All materials will be supplied. A seven minute designer competition that will  be judged by the public. The winner will receive a Gift Basket valued at $100.
